Small School Notes 4/25/2015

TRYING TO CATCH ON
The NFL loves tall receivers and that love appears to be making its way to Nebraska and Wayne State wide receiver Cole McDaniel. McDaniel, who was added to the 2015 MartyandMatt.com All-Steals Team, stands 6-4 and weighs a solid 214 and runs a 4.6 forty. While teams love his size, its his physicality and ability to go get the ball that makes teams like the 49ers taking notice.

STANDING TALL
Teams that don't have a shot at Mariota or Winston but are looking for their future franchise QB would do well to look to Chris Bonner of Colorado State-Pueblo. He stands nearly 6'7" and moves pretty well for such a tall guy. His arm is live and he comes from an offense that required him to call plays in the huddle and make adjustments at the line. He led CSU-Pueblo to the Division II National Championship and dominated at that level. Should have been invited to the combine but has used that snub as motivation.

WORTH A SHOT
When a tight end stands almost 6-10 and has proven he can catch the ball and block, I don't care where he played I'd have him in camp. Welsey Powell is a solidly built tight end from D-II Tusculum College, the oldest college in Tennessee. After a 2013 season that saw him named Football Gazette All-America Second Team, Daktronics All-Region First Team, Football Gazette All-Region First Team and All-South Atlantic Conference First Team, his 2014 season was a minor disappointment as the passing game struggled with QBs completing just over 50% of their passes; down from almost 63% in 2013. In 2014, Powell's reception and yardage totals were down significantly while he equaled his 2013 TD total of four. Should not be overlooked. This guy could be a real steal.

AZUSA PRODUCES ANOTHER BEAST!
NFL.com's Gil Brandt reports that Terrell Watson-Martin (6-foot 5/8, 236 pounds) had a good workout and ran the 40-yard dash in 4.58 and 4.51 seconds. He had a 35 1/2-inch vertical and 10-3 broad jump. He ran the short shuttle in 4.49 seconds and the 3-cone drill in 7.48. And he had 22 strength lifts. Azusa Pacific also produced Christian Okoye.

WISHING HIM SUCCESS Doniel Gambrell, Notre Dame College (6-5, 305).
Kind of guy you pull for, 24 yr old married father of three. When Doniel was 11, his dad was murdered while being robbed. It was his 38th birthday. Scouts love his agility, strength, intellect and an unusually long reach that earned him the nickname "Tree" . QB was only sacked 12 times on the season, the best mark in the MEC and a top-25 mark in the country as well. Has gotten looks from 31 NFL teams, and is widely regarded as one of the top offensive linemen in the entire NCAA-II circuit.

DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN
When Emporia State's Austin Willis (5-9, 175) posted two sub 4.40/40 yd dashes at the schhol's Pro Day, only the Chiefs were there to watch. So the WR did it again at the University of Kansas Pro Day while also excelling on every possible route. This time, representatives from the Seattle Seahawks, Philadelphia Eagles, Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans, Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots, Oakland Raiders, Carolina Panthers, Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, Dallas Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts, San Diego Chargers, Arizona Cardinals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears, St. Louis Rams and Washington were there.

EAGLES MAY BE SWOOPING ON UNH WILDCATS
The Philadelphia Eagles have had private workouts for both UNH Center Mike Coccia and WR R.J. Harris. Eagles Coach Chip Kelly served as the offensive coordinator at New Hampshire from 1999-2006 and was the team's running backs coach in 1992.
