Weak Year For WR's

This year has been labeled a weak Draft year for Wide Receivers. This can be a good thing for the small school guys. FB class not at 1A level

FB class not at 1A level!!!!

It is widely accepted by draft and scouting experts alike that this
year's big school class of fullback is one of the weakest in a while.

The Division 1 ranks of potential FB draftees include Quadtrine Hill ,
Lawrence Vickers, Matt Bernstein and others who, like the
aforementioned, lack one or more of the essentials necessary
for a good pro fullback.

Since no one is going to be drafting a FB in the first few rounds
anyway, teams should look outside the Division 1A ranks to fill
their FB needs. Here are some FB that will definitely be
available in the later rounds and most likely as undrafted free agents.

ROCK JOHNSON Walsh 6'0" 245 SR FB
A definite prospect at FB. This NAIA player was a starter at
Kentucky and has the size, power rushing ability, block
and receiving skills, though not called upon to show the
receiving skills very often. 2005 Stats: 51
rushes, 239 yds, 4.7 avg, 1 TD, 2 rec, 12 yds, 6.0 avg

KEVIN LUKICH Moravian 5'10" 245 SR FB
Was an All-Middle Atlantic Conference and Aztec Bowl selection.
Carried the ball 53 times for 311 yards and two touchdowns
in 2005. Lukich helped Moravian to a 7-4 record this fall
and the 2005 Eastern College Athletic Conference Southwest Bowl
Championship. Though lacking the height most teams look
for, is a bruising blocker, great short yardage guy. He carried
the ball 53 times for 311 yards and two touchdowns in 2005,
while catching 4 passes for 15 yds and a 3.8 average.

R.J. ZITZELSBERGER Washington & Jefferson 6'2" 235 SR FB
A prototypical FB. Great short yardage gaining ability,
excellent receiver and blocker. Knows where markers are
especially the goal line. 2005 Stats: 152 carries,
787 yds, 5.2 avg 10 TDs, 25 rec, 272 yds, 10.9 avg, 3 TDs.

FB OLAYINKA ADEBOYEKU Bowie State 6'0" 250 Sr
Powerful transfer from Maryland. Runs hard, can block well.
2005: 68 rushes, 343 yds, 5.0 avg, 4 TDs, 7 rec, 113 yds,
16.1 average.

ANTHONY CARFAGNO East Stroudsburg 6'0" 240 SR FB
T eam captain. Scored 23 times this season, a new ESU record.
Rushed 98 times for 613 yards and 14 touchdowns and caught
53 passes for 684 yards and nine touchdowns. For his career,
he has an ESU and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
record 86 touchdowns, including 40 on the ground,
an ESU record. A real NFL prospect does all you want a
FB to do - block, run, and receive.

FB JOHN LOWERY Miles College 6'1" 255 Sr.
A good one. He's big and is a hard-nosed runner.
Has also been a devastating blocker.
2005: 324y, 5.2y/c, 6TDs

FB DANNY NICHOLS Minnesota State 6'0" 245 Sr.
Started 2yrs, averages over 5y/c. Great blocker
and is solid on special teams. 2005: 142y, 5.7y/c,
2TDs, lost 0 yards on 25 carries, St's: 9t

FB RORY PALMER Southern Connecticut 6'0" 240 Sr.
Clutch on the goal line, is a tough runner up the middle.
Always moves forward. 2005: 106 carr, 1 yard lost,
568y, 5.4y/c, 22TDs, 82ydr, 51.6y/g, All NE10

DERRICK ROSS Tarleton State 6'0" 238 Sr. RB
Racked up 1560 yards and 134 points in 2004.
Is an All American, 2x All LSC and 2x LSC OBOY.
Can simply play. Maybe the biggest RB prospect out of
DII. Has tremendous size, is not particularly fast but
is quick. Runs hard and uses decent moves. Has dominated.
2005: 1512y, 6.4y/c, 13TDs, 74ydr, 168y/g,
rec: 17r, 192y, 11.3y/r, TD

FB/RB KASEY YOUNG Western New Mexico 5'11" 260 Sr.
Combines tremendous size with deceptive quickness.
Is a bullish runner that can gain tough yards.
Is All-Independent. Can be clutch on the goal line.
2005: 719y, 4.7y/c, 9TDs, 79.9y/g

Not always in the numbers

It is tough to make it big as a small school guy, especially when you lack eye-opening statistics. Some players are immensely talented, but for one reason or another they lack they big stats. Here are only a few random examples.

When you get down to the DIII ranks, you really need to be dominating to get a real shot at the big time. But, you really have to look at the big picture with some of these athletes. Wide Receiver P.J. Williams from Mary Hardin-Baylor in DIII is a 6'3" 180 pounder with great speed and agility. At first glance his 32 receptions seems average at best. But, he led the team with those32 grabs. He also gained 575 yards and averaged a solid 18 y/r. His 9TDs is nothing to sneeze at either. While he didn't catch 90+ balls, gain over 1,000 yards and score 15TDs ... he has one thing going for him, skills. He was named Special Teams POY, he averaged 20.4y/kr and 17.4y/pr while scoring 2TDs on punts. P.J. can catch, run and is an elusive returnman.

Sometimes you have to dig a little deeper. From DII comes Runningback Jess Brinson. He is 6'1" 205 and hails from New Mexico Highlands. He never was the feature guy at NMHU despite being a transfer from Bucknell. At Bucknell he was very effective, he gained 747 yards and scored 6TDs in limited duty. His powerful running style and soft hands has opened some eyes, despite his never gaining much more than 300 yards/year in his time at NMHU.

I-AA athlete Kevin Stensrud from Northern Iowa is another good example. At 6'2" 290 pounds he has the size and he can also move very well. He's a very versatile athlete that could easily play OL or DL. Based on athleticism alone, this kid is a keeper. He made 29t, 7tfl, and 2 sacks this season. Not exactly earth shattering.

Another I-AA player is Montrell Owens from Maine. He didn't gain over 1,000 yards but his running ability is awesome. Montrell is a hard runner that always moves forward. He has deceptive quickness at 5'10" 225 pounds and can be elusive. His 2005 stats are: 779y, 4.2y/c, 9TDs.

So that’s just a few of the many athletes that have the ability but not the numbers. It's not always in the statistics, sometimes you have to pay attention to the athletes that don't get the recognition that the 1,000 yarders or the 100 tackle guys may get.

An Interesting Prospect

Do you need college football experience to play in the NFL? Stephen Neal didn't. After dominating the college wrestling ranks at Cal State Bakersfield, he found his way onto the New England Patriots roster as an Offensive Lineman. He's been a solid contributor over the past two seasons. Now that's some creative scouting on the Patriots part, I must admit. So I guess I answered my own question. Technically you don't need previous football experience to play in the NFL, but, it is a rarity.

Last week an interesting prospect has emerged out of the D-I ranks ... D-I basketball. ED NELSON of UConn has decided to try his abilities as a Tight End in the NFL despite never playing college football. He was an ACC Rookie of the Year at Georgia Tech before transferring to UConn were he was mainly a reserve. At 6'8" 265 pounds he sure has the size, but the skills? Maybe. He possesses a strong body, good agility and quickness ... all great TE qualities no doubt. Tony Gonzalez has attributed his experience in basketball to helping him become the complete athlete that he is today, maybe the same could be said for Ed Nelson. Or will he end up like Rod Monroe? What, you don't remember Rod Monroe? Exactly.

2006 Small School two-way stars.

One of the most appealing aspects of Arena Football is
the resurgence of the “two-way” player. By “two-way”
I mean a player that plays on defense and then has the
ability to immediately jump onto the offensive side of
the ball. Some guys can play offense OR defense,
but it takes a special athlete to play offense AND
defense. There was a time when the NFL had a number of
two-way athletes, such as George Connor who won offensive
and defensive honors in 1951/1952 with the Chicago Bears.
But it’s been years since a true offensive/defensive
player has emerged in the NFL and because of the liability
I’m sure it may never be done again. This is what I love
about Arena, it is a showcase of endurance and athleticism.
To watch players going all out for the love of the game
is very refreshing, I mean, the AFL pay scale isn’t
breaking any records here. Anyway, there are still two-way
stars out there in the small-school ranks and here are
the ones for this season.

RB/CB DE DE DORSEY of NAIA Lindenwood
The most highly decorated player in the HAAC.
Capped a brilliant 2004 season by being named
the HAAC MVP, earning the distinction of being
the first player ever named first team All-HAAC
on both offense (at running back) and on defense
(at defensive back). First team NAIA All-American
on defense, and was also recognized as a first team
All-American on the AFCA College Division II team,
which is comprised of Div. II and NAIA players.

BOBBY BOYER from DII Wayne State in Michigan is a
versatile FS/WR. He was a strong contributor for
I-AA UMass before tranferring back home to be with
his ill mother. Plays bigger than his size, he’s 5’11”
but tops out at only about 170 lbs. This guy
is a disciplined, hard worker that has been All GLIAC
at DB In ’05 he had 133 receiving yards (16.6y/r),
49 tackles and averaged 20.4 yards/kr.

SS/WR BRET HUGHES from DII Western Oregon is a transfer
from Idaho State that combines speed with great size
(6’1” 225). Not only is he a big hitting DB but he’s
also been a good deep ball receiver Had a great year in
2004 when he caught 16 passes for 223 yards and one
touchdown on offense, and made 60 tackles and was tied for
the GNAC lead with 4 interceptions.

FRED SHAW, the hard-hitting DB with blazing speed from
DII Central Oklahoma is another DB/WR. At 6’1” 215 he
is a tough player that had 4INTs in 2004 and then was
All LSC at WR in 2005 with 34 catches for 498 yards, averaged
14.6y/r and scored 7TDs. Also made 38 tackles with 3tfl
an INT and 2pbu in ’05. Has tied the DII record with 100
yard INT return for a TD.

RICARLO ROSS is a CB/RB from DII West Virginia Tech.
He is a fast and athletic player that stands 5’10” 190.
In one game Ricarlo had 124 KR yards (including a 90-yard TD),
rushed for 124 yards and had four tackles on defense.

CB JOSH ARMSTRONG from DIII Linfield has great agility
and quickness. He was All-NWC as a punt returner and WR
(34 passes for 404 yards and five TDs) in 2003 and as a
DB in ‘05. Missed the 2004 season due to an injury.
Josh is also an excellent baseball player for the
Linfield team. I guess I’m going against my own rule here
because I don’t think he has ever played DB and WR in the
same season, but I don’t doubt that he’s capable of doing it.

The 6’3” 300 pound Joe Clark from DII West Georgia has great
experience at both DL and OL. As a freshman he had 39
tackles and 10 tfl at the DT position. He is currently on
the roster for the Rome Renegades of the American Indoor
Football League.
