"Small School" Guys in the NFL Combine 2012

Much like last year, I will be updating the progress of the small school guys in the NFL combine. I'll be watching as much as I can and will try to update this as it happens. I must say that I am dissapointed in the invitees this season. No DIII guys, no NAIA guys and only a handful of position players. However, the DB crop is pretty impressive.

DAY 1 WRAP UP
The FCS lineman trio of Compton, Cornick and Waldron came pretty much as advertised. Tom Compton showed good technique and athleticism but a lack of pure strength. While Dustin Waldron was the total opposite. Paul Cornick was somewhere in the middle. Amini Silatolu may be the most natural lineman of the bunch. He is strong and dedicated, not the quickest but he's athletic. Rishaw Johnson has all of the pure athleticism, size and strength but he repeatedly messed up the drills and had to get called out by the coaches. UMass product Emil Igwenagu looked great. His position is still up in the air. Too short for a true TE he could maybe play Fullback. Regardless, he showed awesome athleticism, agility and some quickness.

DAY 2 WRAP UP
I'm still not sold on QB BJ Coleman, he just didn't show enough today. Aaron Corp from Richmond looked a heck of a lot more athletic than I expected. Maybe he has lost a step since his injury, but he looked good. Patrick Witt was just average. I wish RB Jewel Hampton participated in more drills, he only did the lifting ... but man is he strong. Tennessee Tech WR Tim Benford only ran the 40 and lifted, he didn't blow anyone out of the water with either showing. He's got decent hands though. Brian Quick on the other hand really opened some eyes. At 6-4 220 he was surprisingly quick, athletic and agile.

DAY 3 WRAP UP
I thought Akiem Hicks fared pretty well, at least on the skills drills. He's a big kid so he's not going to run terribly fast but he showed some decent agility. Calen McSurdy impressed me by participating in all of the drills, many don't even bother to run the 60 yard shuttle. What he lacks in pure speed he makes up for with his athleticism. I wish Shawn Loiseau ran the 20 yard shuttle and the 3-cone. What I did see from him I liked. He did OK and that's all you can ask.

DAY 4 WRAP UP
After being so hyped-up for the DBs, the day ended mostly in disappointment. A great deal of these small school DBs faired terribly. A small school corner that runs in the 4.6's is a tough sell. Trumain Johnson is 205 and ran a 4.61 he might be on the bubble because he's got size, strength, jumps well and had a decent 3-cone. Justin Bethel looked good even though his 40 was in the high 4.5's. His vertical, broad jump and 3-cone were off the charts. He's strong as well. Janoris Jenkins and Asa Jackson came as advertised. They are the real deal. Jenkins off field issues are huge question mark. Now for the bad. DeAndre Presley ran a 4.64 at 5-10 185. His other scores ranked on the wrong end of the scale as well. The 40 times also hurt Josh Norman (4.66), Ryan Steed (4.68) and Micah Pellerin (4.61). Janzen Jackson projects as a FS and he ran a 4.64 at 188 pounds but he looked good in all other categories, so I'm not sure what to make of that. At 5-9 195 DII's Jeremy Jones put up 225lbs 20x and ran a 4.56, I wish he participated in more drills. For me the biggest surprises were from projected SS Jeron McMillian and Corey White. They are both similar in size and looked very similar in the drills. The size/speed combos are impressive and their jumping abilities are great (with Corey White's being off the charts). They both looked excellent in the 3-cone and 20y shuttle as well. I think Corey White looked slightly better ... and I'll go out on a limb to say that he may be the biggest steal out of all of these DB's.
