Small School Notes 4/25/2015

TRYING TO CATCH ON
The NFL loves tall receivers and that love appears to be making its way to Nebraska and Wayne State wide receiver Cole McDaniel. McDaniel, who was added to the 2015 MartyandMatt.com All-Steals Team, stands 6-4 and weighs a solid 214 and runs a 4.6 forty. While teams love his size, its his physicality and ability to go get the ball that makes teams like the 49ers taking notice.

STANDING TALL
Teams that don't have a shot at Mariota or Winston but are looking for their future franchise QB would do well to look to Chris Bonner of Colorado State-Pueblo. He stands nearly 6'7" and moves pretty well for such a tall guy. His arm is live and he comes from an offense that required him to call plays in the huddle and make adjustments at the line. He led CSU-Pueblo to the Division II National Championship and dominated at that level. Should have been invited to the combine but has used that snub as motivation.

WORTH A SHOT
When a tight end stands almost 6-10 and has proven he can catch the ball and block, I don't care where he played I'd have him in camp. Welsey Powell is a solidly built tight end from D-II Tusculum College, the oldest college in Tennessee. After a 2013 season that saw him named Football Gazette All-America Second Team, Daktronics All-Region First Team, Football Gazette All-Region First Team and All-South Atlantic Conference First Team, his 2014 season was a minor disappointment as the passing game struggled with QBs completing just over 50% of their passes; down from almost 63% in 2013. In 2014, Powell's reception and yardage totals were down significantly while he equaled his 2013 TD total of four. Should not be overlooked. This guy could be a real steal.
